Tony Morris' performance on JW Broadcasting showed in microcosm how cult indoctrination works
Tony Morris’ performance on JW Broadcasting showed in microcosm how cult indoctrination works

When the JW Broadcasting website was first announced at last year’s annual meeting I immediately relished the prospect of seeing Tony Morris in front of the camera in glorious technicolor for an hour-long show.

I consider myself Tony’s number 1 troll. He is, in my opinion, the most deluded, controversial and intellectually-challenged of all the Governing Body members, and I unashamedly thrive on his misadventures.

As Tony’s train-wreck performance at the 2014 U.S. branch visit showed (which has yet to find a place in the “on demand” section of tv.jw.org), his unguarded rants are an Achilles heel when it comes to exposing the authoritarian, backwards thinking of the Governing Body.

I was nearing the end of my recent stay in Belgium when the news came through that the new January 2015 episode of JW Broadcasting was Tony’s slot. I immediately watched the first 10 minutes with one question on my mind: “Would they let him speak his mind, or would they write his script for him and keep him on a tight leash?”

To watch the Tony Morris presentation without my comments, click here.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this was indeed an authentic Tony Morris offering of verbal flatulence of the type other Governing Body members struggle to replicate. Here was a man whose ignorance was on show for all to see; who had no qualms about uttering such ‘pearls’ as…

“If we are in continued association with those who do not believe the same, it can erode our thinking and convictions.”

“It is one thing to work on a job with others, and quite another matter to immerse oneself in an institution of ‘learning’!”

“I have long said: the better the university, the greater the danger. The most intelligent and eloquent professors will be trying to reshape the thinking of your child, and their influence can be tremendous.”

The above three quotes show in a nutshell why Watchtower is so terrified of young Witnesses going to college and university. They know full well that the critical thinking skills gained, which are an essential part of learning, can equip a person to quickly see through their propaganda.

Put simply, education is Watchtower’s enemy. Knowledge is the antidote to their indoctrination techniques.

The Apostle Paul: apparently not a fan of Oxford or Cambridge
The Apostle Paul: apparently not a fan of Oxford or Cambridge

Nothing spells this out more clearly than the scripture chosen by Tony as a ‘basis’ for the prohibition on higher education. When the Apostle Paul, himself the beneficiary of a good education (or so we are told), spoke about “bad associations spoiling useful habits” he was apparently issuing a call to arms against the Ivy League. (1 Cor. 15:33)

The flimsiness of this scriptural invocation should by itself tell parents and budding students everything they need to know about Watchtower’s motives. Watchtower’s notion of “bad association” in this context is spending time with clever, well-read people who will help you to think for yourself.

But if there is one thing you should never underestimate, it is the potency of Watchtower’s coercion techniques on its indoctrinated prey. And in Tony Morris’ half-hour rant against eduction, these were out in full force.

A classic example can be found between 07:25 and 08:20, where Tony regurgitates a hypothetical scenario (repeated from earlier talks, see video below) in which parents drop off their child to attend university, and enroll him/her at the local kingdom hall only for ‘disaster’ to ensue once the child makes a break for it and starts missing meetings.

“My question is,” bellows an indignant Tony, “who dropped them off at the university?”

Thus the “three F’s” of a Tony Morris talk are deployed:

  • FEAR MONGERING – “Let me tell you about a nightmare scenario that could happen to you one day unless you shape up.”
  • FINGER POINTING – “Allow me to single out those who fell short of Jehovah’s expectations in this scenario, and who will pay the price for doing so.”
  • FAULT FINDING – “Most importantly, here are the main culprits in this whole sad story who bear the most responsibility and need to explain themselves to God.”
  • There is a fourth “F” in a quintessential Tony Morris talk, but to spare your blushes I will refrain from telling you it.

As transparent as these methods may be to you and I, it is sad to consider that they will work only too well on Witnesses who are stricken deep within their indoctrination.

As I express in my video rebuttal to Tony’s speech, Watchtower’s prohibition on higher education is an abhorrent manifestation of the organization’s all-encompassing greed and solipsism. To hijack the hope, promise and potential of young people in this grotesque manner by stifling their opportunities and assimilating them into their propaganda machinery as “pioneers” is utterly reprehensible and immoral.

I can only hope that a fortunate few among the ranks of young Witnesses will see straight through Tony’s nasal oratory and seize their chance to make a break for it, and make something of themselves before the opportunity passes them by.

I attended university and obtained my degree notwithstanding the disdain of many in the congregation. I was considered spiritually weak even though I loved to read the Bible and consider myself a very spiritual person.
They would look at me and wonder why I was wasting my time and ask why I was toiling for “this system” that was going to end soon.
Fast forward 10 years and those same people are still complaining about this system and how awful it is and how everything will be better in the “new system”. Things may be better in the new world, whatever that new world will be – I suppose only God knows – but I can guarantee you that witnesses who are unhappy today will still be unhappy, wherever they are, because they have never really learned how to appreciate the beauty that God has created and which surrounds us today.

“GB used the experience to set the video in an expensive house with a very materialistic america feel. Why they never choose uganda, nigeria or ethiopia”

Thanks for making that point. The magazines do it too. They show a fine house in an affluent neighborhood.

These attractive pictures imply pioneers working part time jobs can afford such homes, or support a family. In the USA, most part time jobs pay minimum wage, or little more. I only need elementary math skills to know that such a job will NOT pay for a nice home, or support a family. Why are JW parents shocked when their children reject the lie these pictures paint?

The WT shows symptoms of dissociative identity disorder. But it’s not all the GB’s fault. They’re merely human puppets dancing for the grand master of duplicity. If you know what I mean …

Mr. Cedars, I must admit I’ve thoroughly enjoyed your videos – WELL DONE!

I agree with you 100%. Phil Brumley would have no “foibles” seeing a “worldly” doctor. Nor would he take issue with seeing one of Bethel’s many in-house Bethel-doctors, such as:

    Enrique Corvalan, MD
    James Harper, MD
    Olga Manson, MD
    Samual Boakye, MD
    Jack Carleton, MD
    Juan Vega, MD
    Tara Chitrakar, MD
    Anne Marie Correia, MD
    Walter Ferguson Jr., MD
    Luis Garza, MD
    David Sun, MD

Or see Bethel’s licensed fulltime psychiatrist: James Howard, MD

Or therapy from Bethel’s licensed fulltime psychologist: Bishnu Chitrakar

This is not to mention the half dozen physical therapists, chiropractors, or dozens of nurses many of whom hold bachelors, and a few masters degrees in nursing (such as Margaret Carroll & others I knew while there), or the lawyers who went to Bethel as such, engineers…

Many of these doctors, therapists, nurses, lawyers, engineers attended University after becoming Jehovah’s Witnesses. And in doing so, went against theocratic direction given them at the time, they suffered ridicule scorn and were labeled spiritually weak only to graduate and be revered later for their education. Any Bethelite will tell you the same, and yes at Bethel some of them received preferential treatment.

Such as Walter L. Ferguson Jr., MD listed above, he went to medical school after becoming a JW and his wife Brenda, became an x-ray technician. When they were invited to Bethel they brought with them their four children – infant daughter Buffy, preteen Beth, another daughter (whose name I forget), and a teenage son Walter the III. Bethel gave them a beautiful prewar brownstone in Brooklyn Heights near the famous promenade to live in, worth millions. Dr. Ferguson’s family remains at Bethel. When his daughters grew up they were assured their own places at Bethel.

Dr. Ferguson did not head the theocratic direction given him by local elders in upstate NY. Nor did he follow the “Faithful Slave’s” advice published in Watchtower articles that discouraged secular education as a demonic snare (such as WT 9/1/1975 page 543). Later, after his education was complete, he became the revered privileged Bethelite, who was even allowed to raise a family, live in a posh home in arguably one of the best picturesque neighborhoods of NYC. All on the generous donations of the slaving rank & file publishers working humbly as janitors, window washers, cashiers, etc.

Keep up the excellent work. Cheers!

    rob,

I thought that folks would be unable to recall feeling unhappy in the Paradise? Isn’t there a scripture that says that bad things won’t come up into the heart?

Maybe I misunderstood, but how could a Perfect God have unhappy people in Paradise? Surely that would be a contradiction of his promises?

On your comment about the rank and file who did not go to University, I would say that it’s hard to appreciate the truly breathtaking beauty of our planet when you are working long, hard hours of manual labour because you were not allowed to go to University. Or so they interpreted the unsubtle propoganda spewing from watchtower.

It’s never easy to be abused, and I am sorry that the brothers and sisters were cruel to you about your choice to go to University. I’m sure that you have pity for these poor souls who have been skinned and thrown around by the false shepherds at watchtower.

I’m sure that the Lord Jesus Christ has great pity for these people. They think that they are doing what he wants them to do. But they’re not. That’s tragic indeed.

We can all help other people trapped within this cult in our own ways. We all have talents that we can use to help.

I salute anyone who cares for the welfare of others. Who has compassion for other people. Well done, folks!

    Peace be with you,

@Rob, I am so happy for you that you went with your instincts and did what you, in your heart knew was the best thing to do for you. I would bet dollars to donuts, there are a lot of people right in your own congregation who wished they had done the same, especially when they get to be 50, 60 and 70 years old and have had a miserable life “waiting” for the new system of things when they think they can do all the things that they can’t do now, but wished they had time for.

I hear comments all the time from Witnesses, how they can’t wait till the new order when they will have time to do this or that, like taking up an instrument. It’s a pity they are wasting their life away, waiting for something that isn’t going to happen. Good for you that you did the smart thing and didn’t listen to the hype from the Society. That’s all it is, hype.

@anonymous,yes the GB is between a rock and a hard place, they need educated people and their incomes but can’t/wont encourage higher education,I guess it’s all to do with control, and is also the result when people start making rules on Christian life. Some thing that Paul clearly counselled against.
But on the other hand I can understand their fear, other religions have become accepting to things that the scriptures condemn, the GB just can’t trust the rank and file to go to far with freedom,an example of this came to my ears yesterday. After the recent “new light” on it being a conscience matter to have a drink before the meeting, apparently during the audience participation in a Queensland congregation,a bro put up his hand and asked,”is it ok now to come to the meeting pissed” I had to laugh, but do you see what I mean ?

    @Wild Olive, you said:

“I can understand their fear … the GB just can’t trust the rank and file to go to far with freedom”

Just an observation. No offense intended.

@Wild Olive. Pissed must mean “drunk” in Queensland? In the U.S. it means angry. I am wondering if the Society feels like it’s losing control and is afraid to clamp down because if it does, the numbers would drop and that is the last thing they want to see. If that is the case, they must be really panicking. At least I hope that’s true.

If I had seen somebody raising their hand and saying “pissed” here in the U.S., I’d wonder what has happened to the org. that I knew even a year ago.

The ones that are sticking it out, are probably as proud as punch at all the “new” changes they are seeing. They probably think of us who are missing out on all the new changes as really missing out but I couldn’t be happier being out. I feel such a huge burden being lifted off my shoulders.

Instead of finally abandoning this unscriptural policy which cause more harm than benefits and makes christian congregation a sports club they dare to go again a “mile extra” and smuggled the idea and reason of reporting among things which makes Christians HOLY !!!

I am a JW and yes the organization does have its problems. But anyhow I went to college and got a couple of degrees. I could give a sht what others think. Many of my self-righteous Brothers and Sisters avoid me and my family. I have two children with degrees and going on getting masters and or maybe in law degrees. When they need legally advice they come to me but I always tell them its not my area of expertise as I am a tax attorney. I always offer to refer them to some local attorney that has a bad reputation or I know over charges. Anyhow I found out that one of my contemporaries who was an elder at an early age stepped down. Not sure why but he used to make little remarks about me and my brother getting educations. He was a tile layer and lived in a nice double wide. Not that there is anything wrong with being a tile layer but now he doesn’t have the kingdom hall status of being an elder. Hope he enjoys the rest of his life. So glad I had the balls to do what I thought was right. Fun to go to the hall in a 2015 C400!

I think it may change when that confession is made.

The Watchtower Overseer said now it is a matter of Personal conscience. I had many brothers who came up to me after the meeting with smiles on their faces& one brother told me I tread a fine line with my comments!!! I am trying to get brothers to reason if NEW LIGHT keeps changing ANYTHING that has been said in the past,WHAT HAS BEEN STATED as NEW LIGHT TODAY Can be OLD LIGHT TOMORROW!!! So in GB WORLD ‘The TRUTH’ can change!! But the Bible never does !! I would rather trust JESUS & myself praying for guidance because it doesn’t change unlike the F&D Slave!!

@Wild Olive, there’s about 8 pages in the Insight book on what constitutes sin and according to that explanation, once a person knows the “truth” and they do something contrary to what they know is right deliberately, that constitutes “sin”. There’s accidental “sin” and then there’s deliberate sin. What makes it a sin is if you know it’s wrong before doing it and you do it anyway. Anything else is a “mistake” and can be forgiven by Jesus sacrifice. So, yes, if they admit to “sinning”, they have done something that could call for a judicial committee meeting.

Hardly anybody actually reads all those pages and “gets” what it’s actually saying. When brothers got up and gave prayers at the end of the meetings, I always wondered how they could ask Jehovah to forgive them of their “sins”.

    Tommy,

Your comment about sending fellow JWs to attornies that either have a bad reputation or overcharge is disturbing on many levels.

Firstly, it is unprofessional and unethical. If you have evidence that an attorney is overcharging, or has committed a similar offence, why have you not reported them to the appropriate authorities?

Secondly, it is in direct opposition to the teachings of Christianity. (1 John 4, Galatians 6:10), to list a plethora.

It is also unseemly to gloat over other people’s misfortunes, or to boast about having a shiny, new car.

Thirdly, do you know why the brothers and sisters are coming to you for an attorney? Isn’t it possible that they may be seeking advice on representation for a child that has been abused?

You are a current JW. Do you go on field service? Are you aware of the child protection policy of the WTBTS?

I’m afraid that there are very many grave problems with your religion. I hope that you have already acquainted yourself with what is really going on. This site is an excellent resource for your studies.

I’m afraid that I fail to see how it is at all Christian to give folks a bum steer.

I am truly sorry that both yourself and your family have been on the receiving end of abuse and marking from the WTBTS. All of us on this site have genuine pity for you.

However, this does not excuse any of us treating our fellow human beings badly. This is true especially for Christians, who are commanded to love.

We all need to remember that the only thing that conquers hate is love. This is true whether CHRIST was raised on the third day or not. We need to have pity for the rank and file JWs, who are victims to a cult.

    Peace be with you,

    Excelsior!

I loved art in high school and was really good at it and when I first became a Witness, I wanted to go to Bethel really badly and I wrote to the Society if maybe if I went to Bethel, if I’d be able to work in the art department and was told flat out, that the only ones they take to work in the art department had to have a college degree in art to be accepted there. I remember it so well as being hypocritical as the Watchtower was preaching college as selfish and materialistic. No elders course at the Mill Hill Bethel, London, would be complete
without 1or2 visits to the Adam & Eve pub next door. Where the
barman would ask what’ll it be brothers.?

Eldering is a pressurised unpaid job, as well as supporting his own
family he’s liable to be called on at any hour to advise or give
practical help when brothers have a pressing problem. Some problems
that can arise in a cong, of 150-200 can be very time consuming and
taxing. Then there is the job of arranging and conducting meetings,
preparing public talks, field service, etc.

Little of the above is taken into account at the c,o,s visit, is he taking
the lead in field service,? that’s the bottom line. That is the basis for
selecting and de-selecting elders, not his willingness to leave his own
job to shepherd the flock, but the “time sheet” the “Field service report”.
Which could affect the quality of elders!!.

The elder arrangement is another example of using unpaid labour to
keep their literature and recruitment outlets functioning.
While some might begrudge the elders a relaxing drink or two, claiming
a bad example for the youth, I would not, though after the meeting and
not before is my personal choice.

So you were not considered qualified enough for Bethel’s art department! Surely talent should be considered – or maybe it is the ability to hide subliminal images in artwork that is the most important thing. See Revelation book page 52. Why the demon hand behind Jesus? Why does Jesus hold a wooden rod? And how the hell did they know the twin towers were going to be destroyed way back in 1988? As they always say, ‘A picture tells a thousand words’.

I sure do now. As I recall, I thought the art work in the magazines was pretty awful and I thought that I could do a good job there and I sent in some samples of my work. Now, when I think about it, did it have to do with “demon” hands? I would challenge anybody reading this to write to the Society and ask them if they could be used in the art department and see what the reply would be. @anonymous, use your art skills for something more gratifying. Like drawing for a child in a hospital…..get my drift?

@howie tran,oh yes isn’t it wonderful how when you get “in” with the org you can do no wrong and they will give you everything and more.
It’s always been an org of haves and have nots,I’ve seen that so many times and am looking at it now.
Ime studying with a guy who’s parents where jws,he’s desperate to be one, stopped smoking, stopped swearing,he’s a commercial fisherman by trade, tough as old boots,is witnessing to his deckhands, the change in him is striking,he’s asked the elders to be baptised 3 times and they have still said no,I have made it clear to him this is the way your going to be treated the rest of your life, but he wants it.
Watching the elders having their little power game is revolting, they won’t actually approach me about it,maybe the see the look on my face when they walk up to me lol

@brandnew,how ridiculous is that watchtower, studied it yesterday,do they want us to be preppers?
The contradiction that was presented is enormous, apparently the GB is going to get a revelation on where to send us all,so after denying for years that their not inspired, their going to get an inspired direction, how does that work? I love miracles I really want to see one lol
Of course here in Australia very few houses have basements, and in some country’s they don’t even have houses, where are those poor bastards going to hide?
