Jehovah’s Witnesses in the US are now being told they can donate to Watchtower online

The Watch Tower Society has started to accept credit card donations directly via its official website,

Anyone with a credit card billing address in the United States, Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands can now set up an account on to make payments to the Society if they so wish.

The news will shortly be announced to US congregations via a special letter to be read out from the platform. The letter, dated July 8th 2013, begins by reminding publishers that “true Christians consider it a privilege to support the Kingdom-preaching and disciple-making work by contributing time, effort, and funds.”

It is not known at this stage whether there are any plans to expand the service to include other countries.

Publishers are already familiar with credit card machines being used to accept donations at assembly and convention venues. However, the Society now seems determined to make broader use of credit cards in gathering much-needed donations.

Here follows a screen grab of’s “My Donations” page, which is only accessible by registering for a account…

And here is a screen grab of the actual part where the donation amount is entered. Note that there is no maximum amount. The amount can be as large as you think you can afford…

An Embarrassing U-turn

The Society’s recent embracing of credit cards as a means of accepting donations raises eyebrows for two main reasons. Firstly, a credit card is a debt instrument. By accepting credit card donations, the Society are basically suggesting that it is okay for you to go into debt with your credit card provider in order to contribute to their work. Considering the number of articles published by the Society about avoiding debt and living within your means, it is curious that they should now effectively encourage going into debt so long as they stand to benefit.

A further reason for skepticism is that the Society has, on two occasions, published “Watching the World” articles in the Awake! magazine seemingly aimed at poking fun at other denominations for being desperate enough to ask for credit card payments.

Note the following 2003 article with accompanying cartoon…

(You can read the above article on this link if the text is too small.)

An earlier “Watching the World” article, from 1973, commented…

Some religious organizations are going to new ends to acquire money. The Coronation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Buffalo, New York, now accepts credit cards, not just cash donations. One finance committee member says: ‘A church can’t survive on 50-cent [cash] donations.’ Credit-card donations are up to $30. Admission is now being charged visitors to London’s thirteenth-century Salisbury Cathedral. A London Observer article calls this ‘a last-ditch attempt to find a way of meeting the desperate need for funds.‘” (g73 12/8 p.29)

Of the two above quotes, the latter does more to emphasize the use of credit cards as a “last-ditch attempt” by the Church to meet a “desperate need for funds.” Both quotes, however, are derisory of accepting credit card donations – and would almost certainly not have been published if the writers had known at the time that their own organization would adopt the same practice eventually.

A Last-Ditch Attempt?

It is certainly telling that the Society have themselves linked accepting credit card donations with desperation, because many believe (myself included) that their own situation is growing increasingly precarious.

Since 2005 the Society has been steadily reducing the number of magazine pages it is committed to printing each month, with one monthly magazine phased out entirely, and two of the remaining three magazines halved in size. The cost of paper and ink must be a key consideration in making these cutbacks, because there is no scriptural argument for reducing the amount of “spiritual food” being offered when we are apparently so deep in the “time of the end.”

Further evidence of organizational downsizing may be found in the Society’s new strategy of closing (or “consolidating“) branch offices. In years gone by, opening up new branch offices was heralded as evidence of divinely blessed expansion. Now closing them is excused as a “simplification” and an opportunity for former branch workers to engage more in the preaching work.

The closure and sale of branch offices such as Ireland (top) and New Zealand (bottom) is evidence of Watchtower’s downsizing strategy

Reasons for Watchtower’s downsizing will always be speculative, but a likely cause may be found in the relentless spread of the internet. The Society relies on wealthy countries for the bulk of its donations, but it is precisely these countries where growth is slowing down arguably as a result of wider online availability of objective information about Watchtower and its history through sites such as JWfacts.

Conversely, growth in poor countries where there is little or no internet continues to flourish, causing a further drain on diminishing donated funds. It is such an imbalance that may be leading the Society to pursue whatever avenues are available in order to obtain money – even if this means contradicting its own previous writings on going into debt and the use of credit cards for accepting donations.

Great News!!! I believe the more they contradict past views that only the truly blind will continue to follow. As the truth is more self evident for those searching the internet they will not be attracted to the Paradise Promise. It always makes me laugh when I travel around the different places and see Paradise all around me. I do not have to wait or follow some doctrine to experience it today since Paradise is right here. Desperation is their next level which will unfold more strange acts in the months to come. So as their older population is dying off so is their members so they rely on the youth which are not so receptive these days. Thanks Cedar.

Good article Cedars! Thank you very much. I like this in the article …there is no scriptural argument for reducing the amount of “spiritual food” being offered when we are apparently so deep in the “time of the end.”

When I was a JW, I thought donations issues were personal matters. But now look at what the WTS taught JWs in the week “24-30 June 2013” in the Watchtower Study edition of 15 April 2013 page 30 par. 14:

“do we discuss as a family how we can use our finances to support the worldwide work through our donations? (Prov. 3:9; 1 Cor. 16:2; 2 Cor. 8:12) Do we view as important the privilege of sharing in the upkeep of the Kingdom Hall? Jehovah’s spirit flows freely where there is such respect and unity.” (

Thanks susanna! A few points to keep in mind about our spam filter… Generally any comments containing URLs are automatically rejected as spam, as spammers tend to want to divert traffic from other websites to theirs. I personally don’t have a problem with folks posting URLs so long as these do not promote content that is evangelical in nature. Also, if you are accessing the web from a public computer, sometimes comments can be blocked because this is also a trick that spammers often use. In short, you are obviously not a spammer, but try to look at your comment through the eyes of a spam filter next time you try to post! ;) If there is anything that might raise a robotic red flag, likely it will cause your comment to be blocked. I know it’s frustrating, but we are constantly bombarded by spam attacks and the filter makes the site more enjoyable for those who just want to read genuine comments.

    • July 9, 2013 at 11:58 pm

Ok, that was probably an awful translation, but you can blame it on Google Translate!

I should mention that I have nothing against people posting comments in other languages. However, it always puzzles me when people can somehow read my articles in English but don’t comment in English? Maybe they’re using machine translation too…

  • July 10, 2013 at 8:55 am

    Let me try, too.

    • July 10, 2013 at 10:34 am

Yikes, what have I started?! lol ;)

  • July 10, 2013 at 11:50 am

It’s interesting that for the past 6-12 months a lot of congregations are without very basic pieces of literature like Bibles, brochures and tracts. They are on order just not being filled. The “Truth” District Convention did not include paper intensive releases that would have reduced production resources. This is while the WT & Awake magazines are paper thin. As mentioned many branch facilities are being closed and sold. Property in Brooklyn is all for sale. And now all major credit cards can be accepted online.

It’s either they are seeing funds dwindling or through the process of reduction and the “donation express” Society bank accounts are getting bigger.

  • July 11, 2013 at 1:45 pm

WOW….that section for donations looks alot like the pages I saw when I helped with the congregation contributions..this is just sad.

My Father once said to me that the organization of Jehovah’s Witness was run like a business.

He died last year at 84 years old, and never got to see the promised paradise that he himself preached about at the doors.

He was born just around the time period when Rutherford claimed that millions now living will never die.

How disappointing it must have been for him to realize that this was not quite true and how much disappointed he would be if a credit eftpos machine (electronic funds transfer at point of sale) was installed in his own Kingdom Hall, confirming his suspicions that he had many years ago, when he had told me that the organization was run as a business.

Well, for anyone who doesn’t know?
Soliciting funds is nothing new to them…
The Watchtower Society has a Website that they…Oh excuse me, I believe they stated that others set up in behalf or at least at the request of others would be more accurate by the British Branch and it’s sole purpose is to solicit funds..Oh, excuse me again, “it is not to be viewed as” soliciting funds when it is clearly set up for that very purpose!
However, one of the things they cite that donations will go to is “Disaster Relief” which I thought you all would find quite amusing…Yes, these Jehovah’s Witnesses are and have always been so civic minded and altruistic…
Please do have a look as this IS in fact an official Watchtower website:

  • July 25, 2013 at 7:57 am

Well now that explains the entire thing. Disaster relief? The WTBTS IS a disaster in itself! I found my relief when I left it in 1997.

  • July 25, 2013 at 8:57 am

“However, it always puzzles me when people can somehow read my articles in English but don’t comment in English? Maybe they’re using machine translation too…”

People may have a limited capability in English or think only in their native language. When I am in Europe (been a few years) There are times when I can speak English or German with some people or vice versa as needed but they may have very limited understanding of English, only enough to get the meaning of things…and yes, they likely have Google translate which is about as helpful as a fungal infection!

Jehovah’s Witnesses DO NOT encourage going into debt. This method of accepting donations is merely a convenience for those who wish to donate from what they do have and are able to contribute to support this non-profit organization. Debit cards are connected to a person’s bank account and make it easier to donate funds electronically.

    • May 31, 2015 at 6:42 pm

You are so right Cory. Deceivers will go on deceiving and being deceived though, sadly. I am speaking of those who oppose The Good News of Salvation through Jehovah’s son and designated king of His Kingdom, Jesus. I see now here on this site something about abusive comments. Those who oppose Jehovah abuse themselves, sadly. I pray they repent and serve Jehovah wholeheartedly. They choose to focus on an organization instead of our Creator. The organization has faults. Our Creator does not. Remember what happened to the people who opposed Moses? I am sure you do. He was not sinless either, but He was Jehovah’s designated representative on earth. When Eli was priest, his sons acted wickedly as priests. Did that mean the people should stop bringing their contributions to Jehovah though? NO. If someone is misbehaving in Jehovah’s organization, He will take care of it. If we do not believe that, then we do not trust Him. May Jehovah bless you, forever, Cory.

JW’s are like everyone else who recognize every thing has a cost! Donations are given voluntarily and within the financial means that one has for the giving. When a person decides to make a personal contribution, he/she do so freely in the amount they chooses because they recognizes that God loves a cheerful giver and whatever is given was provided from God anyway. JW do not encourage debt; however, many articles they print are good information that can be utilized for getting out of debt. The credit/debit card machine is for convenience not creating a bill.

  • March 4, 2014 at 9:05 am

Do you know where your money goes? Do you know how much money the WT just received for selling buildings? Have a look on this site and do a search you will be amazed. With all the child abuse cases, the fact that so many are waking up and seeing they have been duped and leaving has meant the WT is looking constantly for money. Your money is not going to help the poor or needy. The literature is 3rd rate, ask any independent researcher. The material is intended for about a 6th grade mentality that wants to believe that all their problems can be resolved and all they have to do is wait. Sadly it’s been 134 years since the first date was given and people have given up homes, the chance to have children because they hoped what was being said would improve their lives. Its sad. Do not waste your hard earned money to help the WT pay off law suites. Let them take responsibility for the misinformation they have spread.

  • March 4, 2014 at 10:09 am

I agree that donations are voluntary, but they are encouraged constantly.

The WTBTS has earned a billion US dollars in property sales.

They simply don’t need the widow’ smite, do they?

I suggest you read the articles on this site, and then consult your Christian conscience on whether they should receive a penny more.

    Peace be with you

The reason the bible supply was low in 2013 is because they made a more durable, beautiful and easier to understand bible that as always is free to the public. And although the magazines are thinner, there is much more content and media available then ever before. Some people think the society just wants our money but where are their secret mansions, or their opulent getaways? The governing body lives there with the rest of the bethel family. And they eat all their meals with everybody everyday so if they were running away to stay in these secret palaces or go on high class vacations with all of their donations it would be noticable to the bethel family. Celebrities cant even go somewhere without people knowing, so with so many of you haters just looking for something to criticize it would bound to come to light if they were using donations for anything else.

  • September 11, 2014 at 7:55 pm

Wow. So bitter. Dont you have other things to do. People can believe whatever they want or will you force them to stop, to know how bad it is. Should i go and force people to not eat at mcdonalds? Dont they know how bad it is for you? Get a life. I googled if there was a way to donate to online and i stumbled apon this website of bitter people who created a hater site. Move on

  • September 12, 2014 at 4:00 am

Hi Joe. If you just came upon this web site, you should stick around. You might change your mind if you try and find out why we are so bitter. We have a lot to say about donations too. I felt just the same as you do right now until last year when I found out that about 30 years ago when Carl Olof Jonsson did many years of research to “disprove” 586/587 as when Jerusalem was destroyed by Babylon and discovered instead that it actually did fall in 586/587 and not 607 as the Society claims and for all his hard work, the Society disfellowshipped him. Then I found out that the Society secretly joined up with the U.N. from 1992 until 2002 when it was put in a newspaper and the next day, the Society took it’s name off the membership roles. Then those 2 facts opened up a whole can of worms to discover the Society’s real history. If you take Cedar’s challenge to prove that the Society was appointed by Jehovah God in 1919, we’d all be very happy and Cedars has promised to bring down this “bitter” web site. We’d all be happy if you could do that so we all wouldn’t be so “bitter”.

  • September 12, 2014 at 6:12 am

Should I find “other things to do” than try to protect children and young people from paedophiles in your religion? Should I find “other things to do” than highlight the psychological and emotional damage caused by your religion’s shunning policy?

I have plenty to do other than comment on this site. I am in contact with my local politicians about bringing in a law so that your religion will no longer be able to hide paedophiles from the members of the congregation. This will of course protect EVERY child in my country.

Are any of the things I am doing unChristian? If they are not, and you are a Christian, why aren’t you helping me?

Do you think that it is right for child abuse victims to be denied justice in court and for their abusers to remain free to abuse others because of the JWs “two witness” rule?

Joe, you have accused me of being bitter and full of hatred. I am not. I am concerned for the welfare of children and young people. How is that in any way bitter or hateful?

Before you judge us I would urge you to research what is stated on this site. If you find any thing that is wrong, John Cedars will retract it.

    Peace be with you

I was at a convention in pueblo Colorado & I saw the credit card devices. I was shocked, I think it’s discracefull & pathetic for a religious organization to have to resort to such measures in order to solicit funds.

The watchtower society needs financial contributions? Ask the watchtower for some financial assistance such as help to pay the heating bill or food or anything & you won’t get a dime. However catholic charities will help you provided you meet certain criteria, but at least they help

  • October 14, 2015 at 8:56 am

if some one accept this religion and isolated from society because of that society hate him or her. as you know no man Iceland, he/she must be sociable in order to live. as your organization what you will help or support that person up to that person to be stable?

  • February 29, 2016 at 4:24 am

A 1973 (43 years ago) article about local churches donations doesn’t prove your idiotic opinion. The payment system and technology has changed quite a bit in the last years in the same way that a coin became paper since biblical times. Both articles you quote are just newspaper opinions cited in those ancient awake magazines. I hope your readers have more critical thinking than you to spot a utterly fallacious Humbug. Just Keep trying.
